We suppose all the hospitals to agree in the one point ofabandoning the monastic system, and of substituting for it asystem of maintenance, allowances, exhibitions, and this course, the hospital revenues would be immenselyeconomised, while the evils of a vicious system of charitywould be removed. Before leaving, however, the above suggestions to tlie con-sideration of trustees, it may, perliaps, be well to anticipateas far as possible two prima facie objections wbich might beurged against them—namely, First, that founders intentionshave been throughout disregarded; Second, that it would beabsurd, or undesirable, to institute anything like competitionamong children of tender age at a primary school.
