By all means let the Food Board encourage Canadianbusiness, and think up some speedier and more business-like way of regulating imports, was his final recommen-dation. Norwegian Sardines a ProblemA/fR HENDERSON, of John W. Bickle and Greening,Hamilton, Ont., stated that it would probably be sixmonths before sardines were available from have been many factors that have contributed to thescarcity of imported sardines, one of the most importantofthese being the very great scarcity of olive oil, indeedit has been almost unprocurable in Norway. Efforts havebeen made to find a suitable substitute and whale oil hasbeen tried. None of these efforts, however, have been 42 C A N AD] A N CROC E R January 3, crowned with success and the olive oil situation still re-mains an important factor in the trade. The production of sardines is dependent largely onthree factors, tin plate, olive oil and labor. In none ofthese is there any immediate likelihood of pronounced de-clines. It is probable, however, that supplies will be avail-able to permit the canneries to operate. Still six monthsseems to be about the earliest date at which newly im-ported sardines might be expected on this market. Thereis, it is true, a winter pack starting about this time, butthere is a good deal of doubt as to whether any of thispack will get beyond Europe. Moreover, it is not thebest quality of fish. The European demand is likely to be a factor in keep-ing sardines scarce and high priced for some time to is a large demand from England, and Germany andAustria may be expected to enter the market for thesegoods. Probably, however, some supplies will be availableby next Sum
