A number of unkempt, half-naked Brah-mins were carrying ashes and bones of cremated bodiesfrom the crematory down to the river. Statelycarriages with murky coachmen and fore-runners in whitegarments arrived in long lines at the pier with the guests ofthe day. When all were onboard, the steamers whistled, theband struck up God save the Queen, and the little flotillasteamed up the river amid merry chatting and ifiTsiriff STEAMER ON THE GANGES. We first passed hundreds of Indian river boats from twenty-five to seventy-five feet long, with roofs supported bybamboo poles and loaded with grain, cotton, fruit, jute,goats, etc. The crews consisted of men, women and chil-dren who live on river boats for years.
