Arthur Gordon Webster (1863-1923), US physicist. Webster studied at Harvard and obtained his doctorate in 1890 from the University of Berlin, studying under Helmholtz. He spent his career at Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA. He was made full professor in 1900, carrying out research in acoustics and mechanics. Webster was one of the founders of the Americal Physical Society (APS) in 1899, and was its president from 1903-5. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1903. This photograph, from around the period 1910 to 1915, is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
