One spring specimen was taken 12 May, and spring sightings date from 16 April to 12 May. Most sight records are for August, with an early fall record on 21 July. Most birds do not arrive until 4 August, and the last birds travel through about 8 October. There is an 11 November sight record. Habits and Habitat: Unlike many shorebirds, this species tends to feed in dry areas. It has been observed in plowed fields near Cheyenne Bottoms. In the east, it seems partial to alfalfa fields in fall migration. Thompson saw one bird feeding with Lesser Golden Plovers in a burned-over pasture in the Flint Hills on 16 April. Ed Martinez occasionally nets them on mudflats at Cheyenne Bottoms. However, the species generally favors dry uplands in migration and on the wintering grounds in southern South America (Johnsgard 1981). Field Marks: The buffy plumage and yellow legs are distinctive in all seasons. Food: The Buff-breasted Sandpiper feeds primarily on terrestrial insects and other Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original Thompson, Max C; Ely, Charles A.
