Blood capillary. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of a section through a human blood capillary containing red blood cells (red/centre). Capillaries are the smallest blood vessels in the body - not much wider than red blood cells - and provide nutrients and oxygen to nearly all living tissue. Their thin walls consist of a single layer of endothelial cells, the nuclei of which can be seen here (orange upper left and lower right). This capillary is from connective tissue in the human vulva.
