Comments on doppelgangers. This idea, ?ǣ ?the double-ganger ? as the Scots say, is a very awful one, as I have oft times thought. Fancy, on a wild night, such as this, rising from disturbed feverish sleep, and fed by strange, half-supernatural whim and spirit-prompting to wander forth mid the snow drift and blustering wind flow. The Streets all ghostly and lone, wind roaring fiercely. Suddenly a figure passes, turning his face full upon you, ? with what intense Horror would you see ? Yourself! Yourself! Alike in feature, look and demeanour. Or take it in another light. I have often fancied a Spirit-self aping by night my own acts during day. Sitting drawing as I do. ? and this idea is more ghastly when extended ? Imagine a great city by night, spectral shades thronging throught the streets ? the mart ? the bank all full of ghostly ?ǣmockers and mowers ? of the day ?s life. The finest bit of the supernatural in [Charles] Dicken ?s is Scrooge [from A Christmas Carol] looking up at a disused bell in the lone house, when it begins softy to ring, and so do all the bells in the house. 6. Saturday. Making a drawing for title to [Hardin] Andrew ?s ?ǣNewsboy. ? Joe [Greatbatch] called in the evening, (as he wanted another book.) Going to quit his present leech-selling occupation. 7. Sunday. Walk on the battery with Hart and [Dillon] Mapother. In the afternoon Mr. [Joseph] Greatbatch and the boys [Fred and Edward Greatbatch] calling, accompanied them home and remained the remainder of the day, there. 8. Monday. Writing to M [Mary Bilton] the greater part of the day. Title: Thomas Butler Gunn Diaries: Volume 1, page 99, April 5-8, 1850 . 5 April 1850. Gunn, Thomas Butler, 1826-1903
