An introduction to the study of Gothic architecture . a bishop and chapter; this establishment wassanctioned by the Pope, and continued to exist until the greatFrench Revolution of 1792. The church is still entire, exceptingthe west front, although desecrated: the style of this church ispure early French Gothic, without a vestige of Oriental characterabout it. The Capitals in early-work are either plain cubicalmasses with the lower anglesrounded off, forming a sortof rude cushion shape, as atWinchester (39), or theyhave a sort of rude volute, apparently in imitation ofthe Ionic, cut upon theangles; and in the centreof each face a plain squareblock in the form of theTau cross is left project-ing, as if to be afterwardscarved: this remarkablefeature is found in thechapel of the White Tower, London (40), in the earlypart of the crypt at Canterbury, at St. Nicholas, Caen, and other early work, but it has never been observedin late work. The scolloped capital belongs to rather a later periodthan the plain cushion or the rude Ionic, and does not. 39. nc <-th Transept, Winchester, 1079— Cushion Capital. 6o NORMAN CAPITALS.
