Memorial at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park commeration a journey made by the Park's founder to Vietnam to honour his son who died in the war.
Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park near Angel Fire, New Mexico. The building at the memorial was built by Victor "Doc" Westphall in remembrance of his son David, who was killed in the war. He commissioned architect Ted Luna, to design a chapel. It was completed in 1968 and was the first such memorial to be built as a memorial to the casualties of the war in Vietnam. Pictured here is a memorial stone at the State Park recounting the story Dr Westphall taking soil from the site to the place in Vietnam where his son was killed and returning with soil from that site to the site in New Mexico.
