HAND, ILLUSTRATION

The human hand is a specialized organ of prehension (the act of seizing or grasping). The hand has five fingers. The thumb has two phalanges and the four other fingers three phalanges. The bony skeleton includes the carpus (forming the wrist), the metacarpus, and the phalanges. A complex system of nerves and muscles control hand movements. A large number of tactile receptors enable fine sensitivity.
