In this it failed; but it afterwardsbecame a good school for white children, and resulted in the foundation ofthe Willamette University, one of the best educational institutions ofOregon. Salem is the seat of the State Government. The Capitol will bean imposing building. The main structure is occupied, but the legislativehall is not finished, nor is the dome that is eventually to surmount thebuilding. The State penitentiary and insane asylum are not far east ofSalem, in a region of beautiful oak gioves, plain but serviceable resembles a New England town of its size, with pleasant society andmany beautiful residences. As an educational centre and the State capital,It draws together a refined and intelligent population. It covers a largearea, has broad streets, good business quarters, quite a number of factories,.
