The Swedish system is used with daily instruction Gymnastics throughout the year. Each days work consists of a days order, comprising movements which affect all parts of the body—the object being to secure the best physical development and muscular co-ordination, and to overcome faulty positions assumed in standing, sitting and walking. Gymnastic games, wherein the purpose is to gain physical andmental control, quickness, and alertness, are also used. During the winter months the gymnastic drills are given inthe large central hall, and in warm weather the work is done outof doors. The nature study centers largely in the school gar-Nature Study den and is based on the work done there. The ob-ject of the nature work is to arouse an interest inplants and animals, and to teach facts and principles which will beuseful on the farm, and in the home garden. The outline of thelessons is, briefly, as follows :—. Children at Work in the Whittier Garden Elementary Lessons in Plant Life.—Important parts of plantsand the use of those parts to man. How they grow and what theydo for the plant. Germination. How to help the plant do its Lessons with Soils.—What the soil does for the , clay, humus. How the soils are made. Work of the sun,water, air, ice, plants and animals in making soil. Relation of thesoil to water, air, heat and plant food. Elementary Lessons with Insects.—Common insects found in thegarden. Their habits, how they run about, how they eat, their gen-eral structure. How to check the evils of injurious insects. The garden is in three sections. Section one is aSchool Garden small part designed for simple lessons in ornamen-tal planting. Section 2 is laid out in beds rangingin size from 4 by 6 to 11 by 15 feet, on which are grown vegetables,flowers
