Con-tinuing a north-western course, the river flows through a hillyregion, abounding in salt springs and stone coal, passes byCharleston and enters the Ohio at Point Pleasant. Abovethe mouth of Gauley river it bears the local name of New whole length is estimated at 400 miles, and the areadrained, including its affluents, according to Darby, is 10,800sc|uare miles.
