Copper transporter protein, illustration

Illustration of the OprC copper transporter protein from the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This protein spans the bacterial outer membrane and binds ionic copper to import it into the cell. Copper is found in a number of enzymes that play a role in fundamental processes in a cell such as respiration. However, copper is also toxic to cells, so its levels need to be closely controlled.
