Although the term Liberian hippopotamus isusually taken to refer exclusively to the small pigmyvariety which seems to be found only in this andneighbouring parts of Africa, and in spite of the verydefinite statements made by other writers that this formis the only one present, the large common hippopotamus,that immense aquatic creature second in size only tothe elephant, nevertheless occurs in more than ^ne.
