Even many months afterthyroid removal Sutherland Simpson and Andrew Hunter were unable todetect the least trace of iodine in the sheeps pituitary. The pituitarycannot take the place of the thyroid in animals affected with cachexiathyreopriva, nor is pituitary extract able to take the place of thyroidextract in the treatment of goitre and myxosdema. There is, therefore, no•evidence that these two organs act vicariously. The effect of the injectionof their extracts is, moreover, entirely different. But that they have acertain similarity of function in relation to growth and development isshown by the results of their removal in young animals. In both cases. >i FIG. 81.—Section through infundibular recess and neck ofposterior lobe of pituitary of a rabbit killed three monthsafter removal of thyroids. Magnified 200 diameters.(Herring.) Cells and colloid bodies streaming throughthe pars nervosa and passing into the infundibular recess. Relations of the Pituitary with Other Endocrine Organs 117 growth is slowed or arrested, the development of the body generally and ofthe sexual organs in particular is checked, and that of the higher functionsof the nervous system is interfered with. There is also a tendency to adi-posity, which is particularly marked in cases of hypophysial deprivation, but is also seen after thyroidectomy and in myxoedema. With the Suprarenals.—That there is some relationship between thepituitary and the suprarenals would appear from the fact that, asGottlieb has shown, extracts of the posterior lobe of the pituitary and ofthe suprarenal medu
