Wide-angle view of the interior of the dome of the ESO telescope at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) site at La Silla, Chile. This telescope was inaugurated in 1976, one of the largest telescopes of its time. It has an equatorial mount, and the dome is 30 metres in diameter. This telescope is currently used for the HARPS (High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher) spectrograph, the world's leading exoplanet detector. The white tube (lower left) is part of the air conditioning system, maintaining a constant night-time temperature. Photographed in December 2010.
