The Pill, illustration. The oral contraceptive pill, a combination of the hormones oestrogen and progestin, was developed in the US in the 1950s by the researchers Gregory Pincus and Min Chueh Chang. It was approved for contraceptive use in 1960. It was introduced in the UK on the NHS in 1961 (for married women only until 1967). Modern oral contraceptives are used by millions of women globally to control their fertility.
