Switchgrass biofuel research. Molecular biologist loading vials containing hydrolyzed switchgrass cell wall samples for analyses of lignin content. Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) has been studied extensively for its use as a biofuel crop. The analysis will be carried out by a combination of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The data will be used to identify switchgrass plants suited for improvement through breeding. This research is being carried out by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the US Department of Agriculture. Photographed in the USA.
