Classic Boy Scouts of America tan uniform with neckerchief and side

Traditional tan Boy Scouts of America shirt, neckerchief and slide on a mannequin. The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) founded in 1910 and currently with over million members is one of the United States largest and most prominent values-based youth organizations. The BSA found itself at the center of a controversy after admitting that the organization had a policy barring openly gay people from participation. Since the summer of 2012, a number of corporations have withdrawn their financial support of the national organization because of each companies anti-discrimination policies. In January of 2013 BSA leaders announced a proposal to end its no-gays membership policy or to let individual troops set their own policy. In the same month the Scouts national executive board announced that it needed more time to consider the decision. On May 23rd of 2013 during the BSA annual meeting in Grapevine, Texas, Scout leaders voted to allow gay youth into the organization, but not gay adults as staff or volunteers. Many of the American Scouting troops organized by conservative groups or churches have threatened to leave the BSA if it allowed gay participation. Gay-rights groups and the Mormon Church, the largest sponsor of local Scouting troops, supported the BSA’s vote to include gay youth. Photo by Chuck Nacke
