Grand Canyon, Arizona

The Grand Canyon is a huge steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River over millions of years exposing nearly two billion years of geologic history. The area has been continuously in habited by Native Americans who built settlements and many of whom consider the canyon a holy place. President Theodore Roosevelt visited in 1903 and later designated the Grand Canyon as a National Park. Despite opposition from land and mining claim holders, it was designated a National Park in 1919 under President Woodrow Wilson. It as been a while since I last visited the Grand Canyon. I have been reading in the newspaper about the tremendous crowds in the summer months and that has been a roadblock in my mind for a return visit. But with an out-of-town guest, we had to visit, crowds or not.
