19th Century view of Epping Forest, an area of ancient woodland near Epping, straddling the border between north-east London and Essex. It is a former royal forest, covering approximately ten square miles of woodland, grassland, heath, rivers, bogs and ponds. Under the 1871 Epping Forest Act, the Epping Forest Keepers (an ancient and historical body of people) where given powers of arrest.
