Recovering from the illness forwhich he was discharged, he entered the (j8th X. Y. Infantry. Atthe battle of bair ( )aks or Seven Pines he was shot through theright lung, made a prisoner and lodged in Libby May31, 1862. Removed to Belle Isle a few weeks later and exchangedAugust 3, 1862. The wound not healing, he acce])tcd his dis-charge, came home, went to St. Clair, Michigan, where he pre-pared for college, entering the Cniversity of Michigan with the. 266 Class of 70, University of Michigan. class of 69, attending but one year. The sophomore year wastaken with the class of 70. He was elected vice-president of theclass for that year. After a two years absence from the uni-versity on account of the breaking- out of the old wound, whichrequired some ten or twelve surgical operations, he joined theclass of ^2 with wliich he was graduated with the degree He took a three years course in ()berlin Theological Sem-inar}-, falling out one year to superintend the Fentonville, Alich.,schools, but taking- the degree of in 1876. His first pastorate was over the Congregational church inArmada, Mich. After a years service he was called to a HomeMissionary field in Kansas, where he married Marie A.
