The dramatic Mort Homme Monument (Monument to the 69th Division), Chattoncourt, Meuse, France.
From a distance this is an imposing looking monument. Up close it is positively terrifying. The "Skeleton Monument" is without doubt the scariest looking mounument/sculpture on the WWI battlefields. The Mort Homme Monument commemorates those of the 69th Division who fought and died here during WWI (it is estimated that 10,000 Frenchmen lost their lives here). The memorial, by Froment-Meurice, was unveiled in 1922. On the front is the famous phrase "ils n'ont pas passe" (they did not pass), which came to represent the need and desire of the French to hold onto Verdun.
