Therefore the efficiency of theboiler and furnace = Heat absorbed per pound of value of one pound of coal. If the test is to determine the efficiency of the boileritself as an absorber of heat, then the combustiblealone must be considered in working out the finalresult. Thus, Efficiency of boiler = Heat absorbed per pound of value of one pound of combustible. When making a series of tests for the purpose ofcomparing the economical value of different varietiesof coal the conditions should be as nearl}^ uniform aspossible; that is, let the tests be made under ordinaryworking conditions and with the same boiler or boil-ers, and if possible with the same fireman. The following is a record of one of many evapora-tion tests made by the author, and is introduced herefor the purpose of illustrating methods
