His next employment was upon theBoston and Albany Railroad, in 1839. Here, inconnection with Carmichael, Fairbanks & Otis, hewas employed in excavating a most difficult passagethrough a solid rock, the sides of which, when com-plete, were sixty feet on the one hand and eighty onthe other. This work, now known as the SummitCut, was completed in 1841. But his health at thistime failed him, and he returned with his wife to hisnative town, and there remained for two or threeyears. It was during these years (Jan. 3, 1844).
