Nuclear waste. Container (left) of nuclear waste being unloaded from a lorry at a nuclear waste storage centre. This centre is for low-level and medium-level nuclear waste that will be safe to dispose of in less than 300 years. This includes equipment made radioactive by close proximity to nuclear reactions, as well as the short-lived nuclear fission products. This centre is operated by ANDRA, the French national agency for the control of radioactive waste. Here, barrels and metal ingots are kept in the surface storage centre at Soulaisnes, near Aube, France. Photographed in 2004
