NAMIBIA. Namib-Naukluft National Park, Sossusvlei and its red dunes. Dune 45 is located at the 45th kilometer of the road starting from the locality of Sesriem, in the northeast, and crossing from east to west the Sossusvlei, a salt flat in the Namib desert surrounded by high dunes; the mileage gives its name to the place. The foot of the dune is only 300 m south of the road, directly accessible by all-terrain vehicle. The dune culminates at more than 450 m altitude. It is made up of sand pulled from the Kalahari Desert by the Orange River for five million years and then accumulated by the winds there.
