It is verydifficult to match the color of an .egg with that of any other surf ace. It wasdecided that if a system of matching colors was to be followed, in orderto do the work rapidly the eggs must be matched to other eggs of standardcolors. By a careful inspection of all eggs produced on the plant for severaldays, a graduated set of colors containing about fifty tones from chalk-white to dark chocolate brown was obtained. The first seventeen ofthese tones were the only ones used in the experiment. The contents ofthese eggs were blown, and the shells were numbered consecutively and Memoir 31 Plate VII. The color of eggshells is not permanent and will fade considerablyif exposed to the light for any great length of time. The practice wastried of coating the shells with various preparations intended to preservetheir color, but this was not successful, as all these preparations containedso much color in themselves that the color of the shells thus coated wasmaterially changed. The method finally followed was to use, as standard
