Buddhist stupa or chorten in prayer hall of gompa Alchi Ladakh Jammu and Kashmir India
Offerings of Kata, prayer scarves or shawls, and a stupa or chorten in the prayer hall of Alchi gompa or monastery in Ladkh, a Himalayan province of India. Stupas are venerated objects, usually containing the remains of a lama. This region is a stronghold of Tibetan or Mahayana Buddhism. Tibet, beyond the peaks to the north, had suffered religious persecution at the hands of Chinese invaders in the 1950s. Over 90% of Tibet's religious architecture was demolished. Ladakh shows how Himalayan Buddhism functions in a free democracy. Most villages have a gompa of sorts. Alchi gompa is rich in heritage with particularly fine wall murals.
