Metal dewetting. Nickel annular rings (red) created by a combination of electron beam lithography, metallization and pulsed laser melting. These annular rings are supported on an SiO2 (silicon dioxide) surface (brown). Dewetting is the rupture of a thin liquid film on a substrate, in this case these molten nickel rings. This research was carried out at the Center for Nanophase Materials Science at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA. This image was published in 2013.
