When hardening blades to shear boiler plate or iron, heat the cutting edge only (say for 1 inch back) bydrawing back and forth through the fire, making sureto get a very even heat from end to end, then quenchin the hardening bath from a vertical position and cool TOOLSMITH AND STEELWORKER 115 off entirely. When tempering, polish bright and drawthe temper to a purple by moving back and forth overthe fire or on a hot plateof iron, being careful to get avery even temper, then cool off. Sometimes, althoughseldom a shear blade is made with two cutting edgesinstead of one, so in a case of this kind, heat the wholetool evenly from end to end when hardening, after-wards tempering as already mentioned. ^ bo 60. CHAPTER VI. Woodworkers and carpenters tools. One of the greatest secrets of success connected withwoodworkers tools, is to be able to make them so thatthey will hold a keen cutting edge. Woodworkerstools are made now almost entirely of steel, with a fewexceptions, such as a carpenters chisel, which is madefrom iron and laid with steel. But when laying a car-penters chisel or any similar tool dont select anypiece of scrap steel that might chance to be handy, such as an old file because it is of a flat shape, but getthe best steel of about 75 points carbon. If there isno flat piece of good steel in the shop near the shape ofthe chisel, forge a piece of octagon down fla
