Implantation after fertilisation. Illustration of the ovary and uterus of a woman, showing fertilisation and embryo implantation. At centre, an ovary (pink) releases an egg or ovum (white). The egg passes into a fallopian tube where it is fertilised by sperm (green). A two-celled embryo forms after 30 hours; at 3 days the embryo is 16 cells (a morula) and passes into the uterus (dark brown); dividing further on the 4th day. At 5-6 days the embryo is a blastocyst (hollow ball of cells, orange) which attaches to the wall of the uterus. Implantation on the uterus wall enables a placenta (blue) to form at 14-15 days old.
