The first bend of the Salween River at Bingzhongluo, Yunnan Province, inside the Three Parallel Rivers World Heritage Area. The first town on the Salween after it has entered Yunnan, Bingzhongluo has recently been made into a tourist park (with an 80 Yuan- $10 entry fee). There is little infrastructure inside the park, only a few villages (with Nu and Tibetan minorities), an old Tibetan monastery and two catholic churches. Once prosperous from logging, China's 1997 ban on logging dramatically reduced the income for many of the Three Parallel Rivers' 16 minority groups. The government is now trying to push eco and cultural tourism in the area. One of the richest environments on the planet, the Three Parallel Rivers contains less than of China's land mass, yet contains more than 20% of its plant species and 25% of its animal species, 77 of which are on the endangered list.
