View into the Dan-tei (courtyard) towards the Gekka-mon Gate from the Jomei-mon Gate, Kyoto Imperial Palace, Kyoto, Japan

The current Kyoto Imperial Palace was reconstructed in 1855 after it had burnt down and been moved around Kyoto many times over the centuries. It was the residence of the Imperial Family until 1868 when the capitol was moved from Kyoto to Tokyo. The Jomei-mon Gate is one of three gates leading into the courtyard to the Shishin-den (Hall of State Ceremonies) courtyard (Dan-tei) covered with white gravel. In this view you can see the Gekka-mon Gate to the left and part of the colonnade surrounding the courtyard.
