Canyon sediments on Mars. Satellite image of layered deposits (bright areas, centre) exposed within a linear trough along the floor of the Ladon Basin

Canyon sediments on Mars. Satellite image of layered deposits (bright areas, centre) exposed within a linear trough along the floor of the Ladon Basin on Mars. This large channel system flows into a canyon called Ladon Valles. It is thought that the basin may have been filled with water before another channel to the north formed and drained it, leaving these deposits behind. This image, published in 2014, was obtained by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) instrument on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) satellite.
