Heattended the public schools in Philadelphia, withone year in the high school, then went into thecarpet-weaving business with his father and con-tinued to manufacture carpets until called to theministry. He was fitted for College by Henry and his son, Professor Caspar ReneGregory of Germany. He entered Princeton as aSophomore in 1S65, and was graduated third in hisclass in 1868. To prepare himself for the ministry. JOHN PEACOCK he took a course in Princeton Theological Seminary,graduating in 1871. Having been licensed topreach by the Presbytery of Philadelphia in .April1870, he was ordained Pastor of the HolmesburgPresbyterian Church, Philadelphia, in April 1871, apulpit he filled until October 1895. From April1891, to June 1896, he was Stated Clerk of thePresbytery of Philadelphia, North, which positionhe resigned because of his removal to the Presby-tery of Philadelphia, and in the years 1877, 1890,1893, 1894, was a member of the General Assem-blies of the Presbyterian Church. In the GeneralAssembly of 1893 he was the Secretary of the Judi-cial Committee which conducted the trial of Pro-fessor C. A.
