In the tract which I venture to lay before the public,I have endeavoured to include what is practicallyuseful,—and have therefore purposely avoided devi-ating into physiological speculations. The description of the less frequent and less im-portant diseases is omitted, which would have mate-rially increased the size and price of the volume, bothmatters of consideration to a student, who has neces-sarily to procure many works on other, but not lessimportant branches of his profession. The omission of authorities in support of the opi-nions and practices advocated will not, I trust, beconsidered disrespectful to those who have contri-buted so much to the alleviation of human suffering;and if I have expressed opinions at variance withtheirs, it is with deference to their judgment andesteem for their abilities.
