Associated with this pic-turesque town, and its immediate vicinity, are someof the most thrilling events in connection with theopening, particularly, of the Seven Years Strugglefor National Independence, and of the subsequentwar of 1812; indeed, it has been publicly declared bya reliable authority, that Machias has a Revolution-ary history that may be told wath the same pride,as is told the story of how the embattled farmersstood, and repulsed the first attack of the Kingstroops at Lexington and Concord.
