A smiling Galen Rupp of the United States, embracing runner-up Abel Kirui of Kenya moments after Rupp had won the 2017 Chicago Marathon. Rupp's victory at the 40th running of the Chicago Marathon was historic as he became the first American men's winner at the event since 2002 when Khalid Khannouchi took the title. Kirui was the defending Chicago Marathon champion, having won the 2016 event. The Chicago Marathon is one of the world's six major marathon events annually joining the Boston, London, Berlin Tokyo and New York races.
