He shall be appointed by the mayor byand with the consent of said board of inspectors, and shall hold his office forfour years and until his successor shall have been duly appointed and quali-fied, but he may be removed by the inspectors at any time, when in theirjudgment it shall be advisable. He shall be responsible for the manner inwhich said house of correction is managed and conducted. He shall resideat said house of correction, devote all his time and attention to the businessthereof, and visit and examine into the condition and management of everydepartment thereof and of each prisoner therein confined, daily.
