Francis Murphy, American : 1853—27—LANDSCAPE Height, 24 inches; length, 36 inches The thin gray haze of an autumn day overhangs alandscape quiet, deserted, peaceful as the season ofharvest labors close, with the verdure of meadows stillsoft in its clear green, blended with faint yellows thatare never emboldened or disheartened to become the distance the meadows are bounded on the rightby a long, low hill, ending near the center of the com-position in a huge mound whose crown rises above thelonger hills flat back. To left the low, variable landof the meadow is bordered by a thick wood, whose foli-age has all turned to a light brown, touched occasion-ally with light yellow and a pale red, the leafage blend-ing in a soft jumble in its mass, while in front of it inthe meadow the trunks of slender detached trees standout in irregular line.
