Pressure gauge recorder, 19th century. Illustration of the recording mechanism for a Richard pressure gauge. This device, developed in France, was used to record pressures in boilers and steam engines. The rotating cylinder of paper where the pressure is recorded by a stylus is marked with days of the week, the time, and the pressure in kilogrammes. Artwork from 'Chaudieres et Machines a Vapeur' (1911) by French civil engineer Max de Nansouty (1854-1913), part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
