'Tomb of Tamahamah at Kaiakakooa, Sandwich Islands', c1820-1839. Plate 33 from Le Costume Ancien et Moderne By Jules Ferrario. The Sandwich Islands was the name given to Hawaii by James Cook (1728-1779) when, in January 1778, he became the first European to arrive there. He named the islands after the Earl of Sandwich, First Lord of the Admiralty at the time.
