This image may not be used to state or imply ESA endorsement of any company or product Global magnetic field. Satellite map of changes over a period of 6 months for the Earth's magnetic field strength at its surface, as measured by the European Space Agency's three Swarm satellites (launched November 2013). The colour-coding (key at bottom) shows the changes in nanotesla (nT) minus 100 nT (blue) to plus 100 nT (pink). This change is small compared to the overall strength of the magnetic field (up to 60,000 nT). This overall strength is shown in image C022/9872. This magnetic field is generated by the motion of molten iron in the Earth's core. The data shown here was obtained between 1 January and 30 June 2014.
