C, in 1819, andwas graduated at the Military Academy in the Classoi 1840. Receiving his appointment as second lieu-tenant (if the Fourth U. S. Artillery, he was assignedto duty in the State of Michigan, and was engagedduring the fall and winter of 1840-41 in removing thePottawatomie tribe of Indians from that State to theirreservation west of the Mississippi River, and on theNorthern frontier during the Canada-border disturbances,1841-42; served in the war with Mexico, 1847-48, andwas in the battles of Contreras, Churubusco, and Molinodel Rev; the storming of Chapultepec and assault andcapture of City of Mexico, and received the brevet ofcaptain for gallant and meritorious conduct in the battlesof Contreras and Churubusco; was afterwards engagedin the Florida hostilities against the Seminole Indians,1849-50 and 1856-57; on frontier duty, 1857-60
