And thus far no Yankeeexcept a chance prisoner had discovered this Jacksonian march ! The morningshowed us empty trenches from Bald Hill to the right of Thomas. We quicklyclosed again on Atlanta, skirmishing as we went. McPhersons left was, how-ever, near enough already, only a single valley lying between Blairs positionand the outer defensive works of the city. The Sixteenth Corps (Dodge), hav-ing sent a detachment under General Sprague to hold Decatur, to support thecavalry and take care of sundry army wagons,— a thing successfully accom-plished,—had marched, on the 21st, toward Atlanta.
