The original stone church named St Olav s built before 1150 was damaged by two fires It was used by Franciscan friars during the early 13th century who rebuilt the church with funds provided by King Magnus During the Reformation Lutherans claimed the church Following fires in 1623 and 1640 the cathedral was rebuilt and then restored in the late 19th century during which stained glass windows were added depicting the birth crucifixion resurrection and baptism of Jesus A new organ with 61 stops was installed in 1997
