Typhoons near Japan. Synoptic view of winds over the Pacific Ocean showing two typhoons near Japan. Wind speed is shown by colours (yellow highest, blue lowest), and wind direction is shown by the white lines. Land areas are grey. Two swirling typhoons are shown: Typhoon Violet is the yellow region just below Japan (far left) and Typhoon Tom is the larger yellow area in the upper centre. As Typhoon Violet moved landward over Japan on September 21/22 1996, it caused deaths and severe damage. The data for these images were gathered by the NASA Scatterometer (NSCAT) instrument on the Japanese ADEOS satellite.
