It is of an oval form, broadesttransversely, thickest posteriorly, and thinnest at its centre, where it is sometimesperforated. The inferior surface, which is in contact with the condyle, is concave ;the superior is concavo-convex from before backwards, conforming with the articularsurface of the temporal bone. Its circumference is attached closely to the capsule, and anteriorly a part of the external pterygoid muscle is inserted into it. Synovial sacs.—The synovial sac between the interarticular disc and theglenoid cavity is larger and looser than that which is interposed between the disc. Whenthe fibro-cartilage is perforated, theupper and lower synovial cavities neces-sarily communicate with each other. The stylo-maxillary ligament isthe name given to a sti-ong band ofthe cervical fascia extending from the styloid process to the angle and posteriorborder of the ramus of the jaw, where it is inserted between the masseterand internal pterygoid muscles. It S3parates the ]mrotid from the submaxillarygland. It may be proper also to mention here the stylo-hyoid ligament, a thinfibrous cord, which passes from t
